Peers4Peers peer support service
We are pleased to announce that our peer support service Peers4Peers is now up and running, and we would like to introduce everyone to Rachel who is our Family Peer Network Coordinator. Rachel is an experienced adopter of three children and is passionate about peer support.
Rachel has been using her time since she joined us in April to meet with a range of adopters who are interested in offering peer mentor support, and we would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the adopters who have come forward to get involved so far. Our plan is to provide training and support to those adopters who would like to become peer mentors and offer opportunities to meet regularly with other adopter peer mentors to support each other. Our peer mentor volunteers are hoping to support others on a 1:1 buddying basis, via support in education, and via pre-approval training and other workshops. We are always expanding the Peers4Peers vision, and we would like to hear from any adopters who having ideas for peer support.
We are especially pleased to have met with a number of dads who are developing thoughts and ideas around support for dads. We would love to hear from any more dads who are interested in getting involved in the project.
A small group of volunteers have developed a workshop for adopters waiting for their child to “Come Home” to support them to prepare for this huge transition and for the first year of adoption. This workshop will be running in September 2024.
Rachel would like to invite you to a coffee morning 10am to 12pm on Wednesday 16 October in the Eastwood Area. This is open to all adopters, and there will be space and toys for younger children who won’t be at school. This will be an opportunity to meet with other adopters and to hear more about what’s on at Peers4Peers. Bethan Arden Jones, our speech and language therapist will also be there for those of you who have an interest in her work and how she might be able to support you in your child’s speech and language development.
If you are interested in becoming a peer mentor or finding more about peers 4 peers, our coffee morning, the “Coming Home” Workshop and everything else that is on offer, please contact: peers4peers@adoptioneastmidlands.nottscc.gov.uk
Co-production groups
We would also like to say a big thankyou to all those adopters who have attended the education and complex trauma co production groups over the last couple of years. We have learnt an incredible amount about the lived experience which is supporting us to develop a multidisciplinary service created by adopters for adopters. If you want to find out about our multi-disciplinary team please visit our Hub multi-disciplinary support page.
Our teenagers co production group was launched in the spring for parents of teenagers, and our co production group focussing on adopted adults is to begin soon. In the Autumn we are pleased to welcome Al Coates from the Fostering and Adoption Podcast who will be joining us to begin a co production group about Child to Parent Violence.
If you have an interest in any of these co production groups, please contact peers4peers@adoptioneastmidlands.nottscc.gov.uk.
