What will happen if I die before claiming my deferred benefits?
Lump sum death grant
If you die while your benefits are deferred, your lump sum will be paid as a death grant. The Nottinghamshire Pension Fund has absolute discretion in the payment of the death grant and you are strongly advised to complete a Death Grant Nomination form.
Long-Term Spouse / Civil Partner Pensions
A spouse's (same or opposite sex) or civil partner's long term pension will be payable at the rate of one-half of your deferred pension.
Children's Pensions
Children's pension are payable for eligible children.
Eligible children include your legitimate, adopted or dependent children who are:
- under age 18 and be wholly or mainly dependent on you
- be aged 18 or over and under 23, be dependent on you, and be in full-time be in full-time education or undertaking vocational training
- in some cases, a dependant child of any age who is disabled may be classed as an eligible child.
In all cases, the children must have been born before or within a year of your death.

What benefits will be paid if I die after retiring on pension?
Lump Sum Death Grant
If you die after receiving your pension for less than 5 years & you are under 75, then the amount will be based on 5 times your annual pensions reduced by any pension already paid to you.
Spouse / Civil Partner Pensions
A spouse (same or opposite sex) or civil partner will receive a short-term pension equal to the pension you were receiving for 3 months following your death.
Following that they will will receive a long-term pension generally equal to half the pension you were receiving
Children's Pensions
Children's pension are payable for eligible children.
Eligible children include your legitimate, adopted or dependent children who are:
- under age 18 and be wholly or mainly dependent on you
- be aged 18 or over and under 23, be dependent on you, and be in full-time be in full-time education or undertaking vocational training
