The Nottinghamshire Pension Fund Committee has responsibility for ensuring the Fund complies with all legislation relating to the governance and administration of the Local Government Pension Scheme in Nottinghamshire and any requirements imposed by the Pensions Regulator. It also helps ensure effective and efficient governance and administration of the scheme. In addition to dealing with the administration of the fund, the committee also considers strategic investment matters.
What will you do?
Pensioner representatives on the committee act on behalf of all the employed members, pensioners and deferred pensioners who are part of the scheme. As such you would have a duty to act impartially and in good faith. The Pensioner Representatives have the right to speak in committee meetings, but they do not have the right to vote.
Pensioner representatives will contribute views on:
- Any proposed changes to the Pension Scheme
- The admission of other employers into the Pension Fund
- Issues concerning communications between the administering authority, pensioners, deferred and active contributors
- Fund administration matters including the use of discretionary powers, the consideration of policies in relation to late payment of employer’s contributions and risk management processes
As a Pensioner Representative, the work in which you’ll be involved means you will have access to confidential information; you will be required to protect that confidentiality.
Meetings
Formal meetings of the committee take place approximately every 6-weeks. Meetings are scheduled on Thursday mornings. They are scheduled to avoid school holidays. Meetings currently take place in County Hall, West Bridgford but they are expected to move to new offices near Hucknall from early 2025.
Time commitment and remuneration
In addition to attending the formal meetings of the committee and completing the required training, you will also be invited to workshops, which give members an opportunity to look at matters in greater detail. Where possible, workshops and training sessions are scheduled on the afternoons of committee meetings.
While pensioner representatives are not paid for their services, you will be reimbursed for reasonable travelling and other out of pocket expenses (within the United Kingdom) that you incur while carrying out your responsibilities.
The initial period you would serve is 4-years, but you would be eligible to apply for reappointment.
What is expected of you?
You don’t need to be a pensions expert, you just need common sense, an interest in seeing that the Pension Scheme is well run, and a willingness to learn about the scheme and how it works. While there is a lot to learn, you will be provided with full training, which is compulsory for members of the committee. You will also have access to help and advice from other members of the committee and from the Pensions Office.
